The Pokémon TCG Pitch Black release is live. Mega Evolution—Pitch Black arrived on July 17, 2026, and the set is built around Mega Darkrai ex with Zeraora, Chandelure, and Excadrill joining the party. That lineup is weird in a good way. Darkrai absolutely owns this theme, and Excadrill getting real attention is far more interesting than another safe lap around the same five mascot Pokémon.
Here is the short version: Pitch Black has more than 115 cards, over 20 Trainer cards, and more than 35 Pokémon and Trainer cards with special illustrations. Those numbers come from The Pokémon Company's release announcement. It is a focused expansion, not an endless checklist designed to make completion feel like unpaid labor.
Darkrai Owns This Set
Mega Darkrai ex is the obvious face of Pitch Black, and that is exactly how it should be. Darkrai has enough personality to carry a darker set without the concept feeling forced. Zeraora brings speed and a completely different visual energy, while Chandelure gives the artists room to get properly strange. I love a set that lets the supporting Pokémon look like stars instead of background furniture.
Mega Excadrill ex may be the card that keeps players talking after the first-release hype settles. A new set needs more than expensive chase cards; it needs something people actually want to put on a table and test. Excadrill is not a glamorous default pick, which makes a serious deck built around it more appealing. When an underused Pokémon gets a coherent strategy, I will take that over empty mascot worship every time.
The illustration count also matters. More than 35 special illustrations gives collectors plenty to inspect without pretending every card will become a trophy. Some will be beautiful and cheap. That is good. The hobby is healthier when great artwork is available below headline-chase prices, and I hate the idea that a card needs a three-digit market value before anyone is allowed to care about it.
The Sealed Options Are Pretty Straightforward
The July product schedule is straightforward. According to the official July 2026 product roundup, the regular Elite Trainer Box contains nine Pitch Black booster packs. The Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box contains eleven. A booster bundle has six packs, while a booster display has 36. Those are different pack counts, not different levels of collector morality.
If the only goal is opening packs, compare the price per pack before buying. Extra box contents can be useful, but dice and sleeves do not magically make a bad price good. The Pokémon Center box has its own appeal for sealed collectors, yet nobody needs to invent an investment thesis to enjoy one. Buy the format that matches what you actually want to do with it.
The Build & Battle Box arrives July 31, two weeks after the main expansion release. That later date is easy to miss. It includes a ready-to-play 40-card deck with one of four foil promo cards plus four booster packs. For somebody who wants a compact play product instead of a pile of packaging, that is the format I would watch. For somebody chasing specific singles, waiting for the opening rush to produce listings is usually the cleaner route.
Release-Week Hype Is Mostly Noise
I would ignore any claim that every sealed Pitch Black product is automatically scarce. An official launch date tells us when products release; it does not prove long-term supply, reprint plans, or future prices. Screenshots of one empty shelf do not become national inventory data just because somebody adds three alarm emojis.
I would also ignore early “top ten investments” lists built before the market has enough completed sales to say anything useful. Release weekend prices are entertainment. They can move violently as more boxes open and more copies hit listings. If a specific card matters to you, identify the exact number, language, finish, and condition before comparing prices. Pitch Black is new enough that sloppy comparisons can turn into expensive mistakes fast.
