PSA grading costs for Pokemon cards start with the service fee, but that number is only the front door. Shipping, insurance, supplies, declared-value limits, and the chance of a lower grade all belong in the math. If the card only works financially as a PSA 10, the plan is already skating on thin ice.
As of July 20, 2026, PSA's public service page said Value services were temporarily paused and listed Regular at $79.99 per card. That can change quickly, so this is a dated snapshot, not a forever price list. PSA says turnaround estimates are estimates and can move with demand and capacity.
The Official Fee Is Only the Opening Bid

Those figures come from PSA's current service page. They do not include every cost around the submission. Outbound shipping, return shipping, insurance, card savers or semi-rigid holders, sleeves, and possible group-submission fees can change the total. Taxes and international costs can change it again.
Write the all-in estimate before submitting. A $79.99 service can easily become a larger per-card cost when one card carries most of the shipment expense. Sending more cards may spread shipping, but adding weak candidates to “save” on shipping is fake efficiency. More bad submissions are still bad submissions.
A PSA 10 Is a Standard, Not a Vibe
PSA's grading standards describe a PSA 10 as virtually perfect, with sharp corners, full original gloss, no staining, and approximate centering tolerances of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the back. PSA also notes that eye appeal and judgment still matter. A card can look clean in a sleeve and still miss the top grade.
Inspect centering, corners, edges, surface, print lines, dents, scratches, stains, and alterations under strong angled light. Do not clean, press, recolor, or “improve” the card. PSA lists trimming, restoration, recoloring, altered stock, and cleaning among reasons a card may not receive a numerical grade.
The Lower Grade Has to Survive the Math
Compare raw value with realistic PSA 8, PSA 9, and PSA 10 sales for the exact set, number, language, and variant. Then subtract fees and selling costs from the graded outcome. If a PSA 9 leaves the card worth less than the raw card plus submission cost, the entire bet rests on a ten.
That does not automatically make grading wrong. Authentication, long-term protection, registry collecting, and personal presentation can matter beyond resale. Just name the real goal. Calling a display decision an “investment” does not make the numbers better.
Declared Value Limits Are Not Decoration
Choose a service level that fits the card's expected post-grading value and PSA's current rules. Under-declaring a valuable card to force it into a cheaper tier can create delays, extra charges, or insurance problems. Read the current submission terms instead of relying on an old video or screenshot.
PSA's estimated turnaround begins after the order enters its grading system, according to the service page. Transit and intake time sit outside that estimate. If the card must be back for an event or sale, build in a buffer. A best-case calendar is not a plan.
Sentimental Cards Get a Different Calculator
A childhood Charizard, favorite Gengar, or meaningful gift may deserve a slab even when resale math says no. That is completely valid. The return is authentication, protection, and presentation. The mistake is pretending sentimental value guarantees a market premium.
My rule is blunt: the card should justify grading at a realistic grade, or the collector should openly value the nonfinancial benefits enough to cover the cost. Count every fee, respect the downside, and stop treating PSA 10 as the default ending. A strong submission still needs clear photos, a realistic grade range, and enough value or personal meaning to make the wait worthwhile. The slab has to earn its place.
