Pokemon TCG Pocket: Is It Ruining the Game?

Pokemon TCG Pocket dropped last month and the response was... unexpected.

Everyone expected it to flop. It's digital, right? Who cares about digital Pokemon cards? People want physical cards. Real cards you can hold. Real cards you can flip.

But here's the thing: Pokemon TCG Pocket is actually good.

The app is smooth. The card animations are beautiful. The matchmaking is fast. And the cards are authentic — they use the same artwork, the same Holo effects, the same everything as the physical TCG.

I've been playing it every day since launch. And honestly? I'm still using physical cards.

Pokemon TCG Pocket isn't "replacing" the physical game. It's complementing it.

I use the app to practice my decks. I use it to test out new trades before I actually make them. I use it to keep up with new releases without spending $200 on sealed product. It's a sandbox for collectors — you can test cards, test trades, test strategies without any risk.

The app has introduced a new generation of collectors to the hobby. Kids who've never held a physical card are now collecting digital cards. Some of them might eventually buy physical cards. Others might stick with digital forever. Who cares? Both are valid ways to enjoy Pokemon.

I have friends who've quit the physical TCG entirely. They say it's too expensive, too time-consuming, too complicated. They've moved to TCG Pocket and they're happier.

Is that a bad thing?

I don't think so. The TCG is growing. More people are playing, more people are collecting. Whether they're physical or digital doesn't matter — the hobby is expanding.

The only thing I'm worried about is the long-term. How long will Pokemon support this app? What if the digital card values crash? What if they shut it down in 3 years?

For now, I'm enjoying it. I'm playing daily. I'm trading digital cards. But I'm still holding onto my physical collection. Because physical cards aren't going anywhere — at least, not yet.
